Great read! Insightful and honest. I am mixed race, for me it has never been an issue. I have a lot of different ethnicities running through my blood, and I always had trouble filling out those forms where they asked you to confirm your ethnicities. None of the choices seems to fit me, so I always ticked others. People are puzzled because they can't put me into a specific category. I was born and raised on the French island of Reunion. Over there i am described as a 'Metisse" which is a much better word than "Mixed race". There is a very positive vibe about this word "metisse" because it implies that you are luckier than people who are not by the fact that you can take advantage of the best of both world. There is a certain richness in you that can only exist because of your family background. I like describing myself as an Islander. My daughters are also 'metisse' my eldest looks quite exotic and my youngest looks very caucasien. They understand their ethnic background and have no issues with it.
